BMW Garmisch, 2019

BMW Garmisch is a concept car made by BMW together with Bertone in 1970. Designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone, the car was built in 1969 on the basis of the BMW 2002 Tii and was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970. The car, named in honor of the ski resort of Garmisch, was set up in a few months; Nuccio Bertone entrusted the task to Gandini, to whom he commanded to create a car that had some breaking features with the BMWs of the time (which were characterized by rounded lines) to replace the BMW 1602.

One of the many BMWs designed by Italian studios, like the 328 Mille Miglia by Carrozzeria Touring and the M1 by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Garmisch didn’t make it into production, but it inspired some models introduced in the 1970s, like the first-generation 5 Series.

BMW unveiled an all-new Garmisch, lovingly and carefully rebuilt from the ground up to represent a picture-perfect duplicate of Gandini’s original. More importantly, the much-vaunted all-electric era will call for even more variation in design, especially with regard to customization.
