Compared to the standard production model, the prototype F40 can be distinguished by its different wing mirrors, five rear side vents instead of four, a thinner rear wing, a different kevlar weave to the tub, and quilted headlining.

The rare Prancing Horse prototype was recently mechanically re-commissioned by the factory and awarded its Red Book Classiche Certification that confirms it's a prototype, the owner it was gifted to and that it was gifted by Enzo Ferrari himself.

Interestingly, it’s also equipped with specially fabricated catalytic converters, which, combined with a cable-sized hole in the rear bulkhead, has led Cottingham to believe that this car was used to develop the cat system found on all later F40s.
