2 men arrested for inciting communal tension by destroying 3 mazars

|HT|

Two men have been arrested on Monday on charges of damaging vandalising shrines to incite communal tension in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, a senior police officer said. The two accused have been identified by the police as two brothers, Mohd Kamal Ahmad and Mohd Adeeb. UP additional director general of police (ADG), law and order, Prashant Kumar said the two damaged three mazars under Sherkot police station limits of Bijnor on Sunday while wearing saffron scarf as if some people from the Hindu community demolished the shrines and incite communal violence.

Three shrines that have been vandalised are Jalalshah’s mazar, Bhureshah’s mazar and Qutubshah’s mazar.

The incident was reported only a day before Shivratri of Saawan month to be observed on Tuesday when there will be huge movement of Kanwariyas on several routes of Bijnor and its adjoining west UP districts.

He said the Bijnor police was alerted when the first information of two shrines Jalalshah’s mazar and Bhureshah’s mazar was reported by locals on Sunday evening. Later information about another mazar of Qutubshah was also received. The state police’s intelligence units and police station officers investigated the complaints on priority and tracked down the accused within within a few hours.

Prashant Kumar said the case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to an attempt to promote enmity between two groups on grounds of religions and disturbing peace has been registered and strictest action will be taken against them.

Kumar said the intelligence units are further interrogating the two brothers to ascertain their plans and establish if they were associated with any organised group or have done this act independently.
