The oldest clothing company still in business in America is Brooks Brothers, which was established in Manhattan, New York City, in 1818.

Originally a family-run enterprise, Brooks Brothers now makes furniture for the house in addition to apparel for men, women, and children. From June 2014 to 2020, designer Zac Posen served as the brand's creative director for its women's line. Michael Bastian has served as the company's creative director for both the men's and women's collections since December 2020.

Henry Sands Brooks (1772–1833) founded H. & D. H. Brooks & Co. on the northeast corner of Catherine and Cherry streets in Manhattan on April 7, 1818, when he was 45 years old. "To manufacture and deal solely in merchandise of the finest body, to sell it at a fair profit, and to deal with people who seek and appreciate such product," he announced as his guiding concept.

In 1833, his four sons, Elisha, Daniel, Edward, and John, inherited the family business and in 1850 renamed the company "Brooks Brothers. At the beginning of its existence, Brooks Brothers were credited with popularising the ready-to- wear suit among American consumers.

Abraham Lincoln was outfitted by Brooks Brothers in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the company regarded him as a devoted client. Abraham Lincoln wore a coat made especially for him by Brooks Brothers at his second inauguration.

Winthrop Holly Brooks, the last member of the Brooks family to lead the business, did so from 1935 until the company was sold in 1946, at which point Julius Garfinckel & Co. bought it.
