Jhulan Goswami, just one wicket away from historic landmark

|HT|

At 39, Jhulan Goswami continues to reach new heights in international cricket. On Thursday, when she took the wicket of New Zealand's wicketkeeper-batter Katey Martin, she reached a massive feat at the women's World Cups. The Indian right-arm pacer is now the joint-highest wicket-taker in the history of the tournament, leveling with Australia's Lynn Fullston at 39 wickets. The 2022 edition is Jhulan's fifth appearance in the women's World Cup.

Jhulan ended with figure of 1/41 in 9 overs as New Zealand ended their innings at 260/9 in fifty overs.

Here's the list of top wicket-takers at the global event:

  • Lynn Fullston (Australia) - 39

  • Jhulan Goswami (India) - 39

  • Carole Hodges (England) - 37

  • Clare Taylor (England) - 36

  • Cathyrn Fitzpatrick (Australia) - 33

Earlier, all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar starred with the ball, claiming four wickets to help India restrict hosts New Zealand to 260 for 9 in the side's second game of the tournament in Hamilton. Vastrakar bowled a brilliant spell giving away 34 runs in her 10-over quota while snaring four wickets, including the important scalps of skipper Sophie Devine (35) and Amy Satterthwaite (75). She was unlucky to miss out on a hat-trick in the 47th over. Spinners Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/46) and Deepti Sharma (1/52) claimed three wickets between them.

For New Zealand, Satterthwaite (75 off 84) and Amelia Kerr (50 off 64) scored half-centuries, while Katey Martin pitched in with a valuable 41 to power the hosts to a 250 plus score. India had earlier won the toss and opted to field in the game.

India made a winning start to the tournament, cruising to a 107-run victory over Pakistan in their opening game on Sunday. Opener Smriti Mandhana and Vastrakar slammed half-centuries to take India's score to 244/7, before the side bowled Pakistan out on 137.
