Kisan Sansad – A Simulation of Parliament session

|THE DEN|

On July 22, a group of 200 farmers arrived at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to start the first session of the “Kisan Sansad”, as part of their eight-month-long protest against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Central government in September last year. It was decided that this practice will continue till the end of Monsoon session scheduled on August 13. Nevertheless, the Delhi government and police agreed to let farmers hold the Kisan Sansad till August 9 between 11am and 5pm with a maximum 200 protestors at the site.

On July 26, The Congress leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, marched towards the parliament and reiterated their support to farmers.

“I have brought farmers’ message to the Parliament”

Later the tractor got seized and six congress leaders were detained by the Delhi police under violation of section 144 of CrPC. On August 6, several opposition party leaders went to Jantar Mantar to express solidarity against the farm laws and joined the “kisan sansad”.

Culmination of Kisan Sansad

As per permission the anti-farm law protestors at Jantar Mantar wrapped up their demonstration on the evening of August 9 after passing ‘no confidence motion’ against the Modi government, demanding resignation of the BJP-led dispensation.

However, the protests that started nearly nine months ago, shall continue on the outskirts of the national capital as farmers fear the legislation will undermine existing agricultural markets and leave farmers at the mercy of private corporations.

One question that we all have,

“The entire world is talking about this movement, but why isn’t our government, Are farmers' voices aren't loud enough to reach out to the Modi government?”
