|THE DEN|

Masaba Gupta, the daughter of Indian actress Neena Gupta and West Indies cricketer Viv Richards was born in 1989. She grew up in Mumbai. The design aesthetic of Gupta has been

described as a mix of contemporary and traditional, with modernity taking the lead.

She specializes in ethnic wear for women and uses silk, chiffon, cotton and tops it up with rich embroidered work. She is known for her unique prints, feminine drapes, and silhouettes.

In 2017, she was tasked with representing India in an exhibit showcasing re-designs of Levi's iconic trucker jacket. She chose to use her signature cow motif. The exhibit also featured a

redesign by Justin Timberlake and other celebrities. In 2018, she launched a hijab-saree line aimed at Muslim women who desire to dress in Indian haute couture.

Gupta has been credited as the first Indian designer to do a fashion show via Instagram. She claims that around 60 percent of her sales happen through WhatsApp. In 2019, Netflix announced a new TV series starring Gupta and her mother Neena Gupta, “ Masaba Masaba”, a semi-fictional series in which the duo show glimpses of their lives with fashion and

film.

The label is well-known for its India-centric distribution and Caribbean roots. Dr. Manmohan Singh, India's former Prime Minister, presented her with the 'Business Excellence & Innovation Best Practices' award in 2019.

When Netflix announced a new series featuring her and her mother, actor Neena Gupta, the 30-year-old designer reported a $1 million investment in her company and launched a collection of lipsticks and nail polish with beauty shop Nykaa Cosmetics.

This followed collaborations for a capsule collection for Game of Thrones last season, a sari line with Banaras company Ekaya, and Africa-inspired tribal jewellery with Jaipur-based jeweller Amrapali, all of which debuted between February and May of last year.
