New Covid variant don't panic: WHO

World Health Organization Chief Scientist David Orr on Friday advised people not to panic over Omicron coronavirus variants and said it was too early to say if vaccines will need to be revised. Soumya Swaminathan said it is impossible to predict whether Omicron will become dominant at the Reuters Next conference.

Swaminathan said Omicron was "highly transmissible" and that the number of cases is doubling daily in South Africa. “How worried should we be? Our situation has changed from a year ago, so we must be cautious and prepared."

Delta is responsible for 99% of all infections in the world. In order to become dominant worldwide, it must be more transmissible. However, you can't predict it."

I hope it's a milder variant, but it's too early to determine what the actual variant is," Swaminathan said.
