UNSC under Indian Presidency, August 2021

Taking over from France, India assumed the rotating Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August. First time in over 75 year, the Indian Prime minister has presided over an event of the 15 member UN body.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the debate on ‘Enhancing Maritime Security- A case for international cooperation’, through a video conference, at a meeting of the United Nation Security Council on August 9.

India has been elected for eighth time as a non-permanent member.

The UN Security Council has discussed and passed resolutions on different aspects of maritime security and maritime crime. PM Modi discussed ways to effectively counter maritime crime and insecurity, and strengthen coordination in the maritime

domain;

  • Maritime trade without barriers so as to establish legitimatetrade.

  • Peaceful settlement of maritime disputes and only on the basis of international law.

  • Encouragement to responsible maritime connectivity.

  • Present nations to collectively combat maritime threats

  • posed by non-state actors and natural calamities.



Lastly, PM Modi said that we have to preserve the maritime

environment and maritime resources.


"We want to make an inclusive framework on maritime security in our region based on the vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region). This vision is for a safe, secure, and stable maritime domain."



After Prime Minister Modi, Now Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the foreign minister of India is leaving on August 16 for New York to chair UNSC special session on terrorism and peacekeeping on August 18 and 19.

In the first week of August, India’s ambassador to the UN, T S Tirumurti discussed halting the Taliban campaign, held under Indian presidency.
