WhatsApp vanishing messages highlight: When it works and when not

|TOI|

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has expanded the functionality of its disappearing messages feature. WhatsApp users will now have the option to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats. This means that when enabled, all new one-on-one chats they or another user starts will be set to disappear at their chosen duration. The company has also added a new option when creating a group chat that lets users turn the option

*If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 day period, the message will disappear from the chat. However, the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened.

*When a user replies to a WhatsApp message where the initial message is quoted

The feature will not work if a user replies to a message which quotes another message. This means that if a user replies to a disappearing message, the quoted text might remain in the chat even after the duration selected is over.

*If another user forwards the disappearing message to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat

*If a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup. Disappearing messages will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.

*The disappearing chat message is forwarded or taken a screenshot of before it disappears. Or a photo of the disappearing message is taken with a camera or other device before it disappears.

*Another case where the feature will not work is if the chat is copied and saved content from the disappearing message before it disappears.
