Thus, at the beginning of the Christian era, the Hellenistic
scientist and engineer Heron of Alexandria describes devices
that use the power of steam to automatically open the doors of
a temple or operate a small turnstile. In the 17th century, people began to understand the concepts
of vacuum or atmospheric pressure and the behavior of gases.
And soon there was an attempt to use the power of the vacuum
to harvest energy.
The first attempt concerned a system to pump water out of the
mines. Vapor was introduced into a tank and allowed to cool
until it condensed. This created a negative pressure inside, through which the pit
water could be sucked in through a pipe. There was a system of
pipes, valves, and tanks, and sometimes they used to explode.
Everything worked systematically, but it wasn't very efficient.
