|HT|

Four warkaris (devotees of Lord Vitthal) were killed and 16 others injured after a speeding truck rammed into their tractor at Solapur late on Sunday night. The accident happened around 11pm on Sunday along the Pandharpur-Solapur road stretch.

The deceased have been identified as Tukaram Sudam Shinde, 14, Bhagabai Jarasand Misal, 60, Jarasand Madhav Misal, 65, and Dnyaneshwar Dattatray Salunkhe, 16, all residents of Kadamwadi in the Tuljapur area of Osmanabad.

“We are awaiting the report of a three-member committee of regional transport office (RTO). They have done their inspection and based on details like skid marks, speed, etc., they will submit a report. After that we will decide which sections to invoke,” said Tejaswi Satpute, superintendent of Solapur rural police.

According to officials, the front left tyre of the truck was found in burst condition when the inspectors visited the spot. Whether the burst led to the accident or the accident caused the burst is yet to be ascertained. “The number of deceased is four and it has remained so since last night. All the injured are undergoing treatment at Solapur civil hospital,” said senior police inspector Arun Fuge of Solapur taluka police station.

A case in the matter will be registered at Solapur taluka police station.
