Centre appoints Gyanesh Bharti as new commissioner of unified MCD

|HT|

The Centre on Friday appointed 1998 batch IAS officer Gyanesh Bharti as the new commissioner of unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the ministry of home affairs said.

The Centre has appointed 1992 batch IAS officer Ashwani Kumar as the special officer in the unified MCD. Under the rules, he will take over the role of elected councillors and municipal committees till the fresh civic polls are held.

The unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi comes into effect from Sunday, as per the notification of the union government. The term of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) ended on May 18, while the term of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) ended on Thursday. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) will complete its tenure on May 22. The Centre merged the three civic bodies into a single MCD with Parliament passing the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, this ten years after the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government had trifurcated it.
