|HT|

The monsoon rains are expected to pick up over northwest and central India over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday, hopeful that it will be able to announce the likely arrival of monsoon in Delhi tomorrow. “We are expecting to announce a likely monsoon arrival day for Delhi on Tuesday. Before monsoon arrival is announced over Delhi there should be widespread rainfall over the city for 1 or 2 days and there should be easterly winds which are already met,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist at the National Weather Forecasting Centre.

“Right now there is widespread rainfall over Gujarat but from June 28-29 we are expecting rains to increase over northwest and central India,” he added.

IMD, however, hasn’t yet given a date for monsoon arrival in Delhi as rains are yet to begin here. The expected date for monsoon arrival in Delhi is June 27.

Private weather forecasting company Skymet Weather, said they did not expect any major delay in monsoon arrival in Delhi either.

“We do not expect any major delay in monsoon arrival over Delhi. Cloud cover should increase, there should be continuous rain for more than a day and a significant increase in humidity for monsoon arrival to be announced. After arrival, there may be a short lull in monsoon over northwest India but active monsoon conditions will continue over east, peninsular and central India for the first ten days of July,” said Mahesh Palawat, Skymet’s vice president, climate change and meteorology,

IMD officials said the northern limit of monsoon (NLM) is now passing through Deesa in northeast Gujarat, Ratlam, Shivpuri and Rewa of Madhya Pradesh and Churk in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra.

Over the next three to four days, IMD said the monsoon, which has advanced into most parts of the Arabian Sea and Gujarat, could cover parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

On Sunday, IMD recorded very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Uttarakhand, sub-himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Telangana, Konkan and Goa and heavy rainfall at isolated places over east Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Mahe in Puducherry, Gujarat region and Kerala.

The weather office said widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning was very likely over Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh from June 27 to 29; over Himachal Pradesh, east Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh from June 28 to 30; over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from June 29 to 30.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over west Rajasthan on July 1; Uttarakhand on June 30; east Rajasthan on June 27 and 28; west Uttar Pradesh on June 28 and July 2 and over Himachal Pradesh on June 29 and 30. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Uttarakhand from June 27 to 29; western Uttar Pradesh on June 29 and 30; east Uttar Pradesh from June 28 to 30. Widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall are very likely over west Madhya Pradesh on June 27 and 28; east Madhya Pradesh from June 28 to July 1; Chhattisgarh till July 1; Vidarbha from June 27 to 29. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over west Madhya Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh in the next two days. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely to continue over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the next 5 days.
