Nawab Malik moves to special court seeking permission to vote in Rajya Sabha elections

|HT|

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik, who was arrested on February 23 in connection with a money laundering case and has been hospitalised, on Monday moved a special court seeking permission to vote in the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections. “Applicant is duty-bound to represent the residents of his constituency in electing a representative to the Rajya Sabha and is also desirous to cast his vote...,” Malik said in his plea. Malik pleaded he may be taken in an ambulance under medical supervision for a few hours so that he can vote.

The court will hear the petition on June 8 along with former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh’s similar plea. On Friday, Deshmukh filed his plea seeking temporary release for a day to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections. The court asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file its response to Deshmukh’s plea.

ED on Monday sought more time to submit its reply and the court accordingly granted the agency time till June 8. It arrested both Deshmukh and Malik. The two are currently in judicial custody. Deshmukh was also arrested in connection with a money laundering case.
