Nuh Violence; Locals Claim That Properties Demolished Were Legal

Six instances of demolition show the Haryana government's response to the Nuh violence before the Punjab & Haryana high court intervened on Monday to halt an apparent anti-Muslim drive in which a tiles shop, a kiosk, five shops and a dhaba, a hotel, 19 shops and restaurants, and a house were demolished.

A three-story tile dealership in Tiranga Chowk in Nuh, which was the only one in the entire Tauru and Nuh region and had more than 3,000 different types of tiles, was demolished on the grounds that it had been built without a permit and unlawfully. Owner Liyakat Ali, however, claimed that the property was legitimate, had been in use for the previous six years, and that he had lost goods worth Rs. 6 crore.

Akbari Begum claimed that in 2013, the state's Priyadarshni Awaas Yojna programme provided her with a home under the BPL (below poverty line) quota. The land was given to her by the panchayat, and the government granted her 1 lakh to build the house. The project aimed to empower women, and the homes were registered in the name of the woman who would live in them.
