PM Modi chairs high-level meeting to review security preparedness amid Ukraine crisis

|HT|

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday to review India’s security preparedness and the prevailing global scenario in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Prime Minister has held several high-level meetings, involving Union ministers and senior officials, ever since Russia launched its military assault on Ukraine and India began a massive operation, titled ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back its stranded citizens from the war-hit nations. Sunday's meeting was attended by defence minister Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman among others, besides foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and national security advisor Ajit Doval.

Details of the meeting are yet to emerge. Modi has also held talks with leaders of the two warring nations – Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy -- and called for a return to talks and diplomacy to end the bloodshed and destruction. India has so far been cautious in its response towards Russia's invasion and has abstained on resolution passed against Moscow at the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Indian government and the PM have received praise and been thanked by leaders of neighbouring nations for safely bringing back some of their stranded residents too.
